Counselling

I have spent countless hours with clients delving into the unique and complex challenges they face.  Even in a position of authority as a child protection social worker, I am able to spend time building rapport and trust with people who are typically experiencing some of the worst days of their lives.  Using clinical skills and my natural talents, counselling clients during times when they feel like the world is against them and I can provide a reflexive and empathetic space for them to talk is one of the most rewarding parts of being a social worker.

Advococy

My persistence in advocating for my clients to receive the help and care they are entitled to is a skill I'm proud of.  I use my extensive knowledge of policy, health and social care, and legal frameworks to find creative ways to offer the best possible support and resources available.  My ability to build rapport not only with clients but with aligned professionals creates a collaborative and effective space for clients to heal.

Curosity

I am a "knower". I want to know about everything. I love learning and strive to gain knowledge for personal and professional betterment. I actively participate in ongoing education and training. Being curious also helps me dig below the surface to find the root causes of client challenges.

My Approach

The way I practice as a Social Worker is something I am highly proud of. I love what I do and the profession I'm in. My life has been dedicated to service to others from a young age, and I'm excited to see where that takes me.

My approach to practice is theoretically diverse, drawing from anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, feminist, and biopsychosocial models. I am trained in using the Sociological Imagination to better understand the role of society's impact on my client's "personal troubles" and how they relate to broader "public issues" and to sit in a place of curiosity rather than judgment.

I also practice social work reflexively and make sure to temper my client interactions with insight into how my thoughts, feelings, and experiences are the filters through which I engage as a professional. Self-awareness sits high on my list of integral qualities for competent interaction and I endeavour to work with careful and skillful intention to honour my clients and the time they spend with me.
