  • In this position, I receive and investigate referrals of child abuse and/or neglect and make first contact with all involved parties. I use professional judgment, standardized assessments, and consultation to determine the safety of a child and prescribe next steps to remedy substantiated incidents of maltreatment.

​

  • I provide emergency and on-call protective services when required and make collaborative determinations regarding the potential apprehension of a child from an unsafe environment and plan for their care.  This also includes taking the lead on subsequent legal action, including applications for the Court of Queens Bench for a protective legal status for a child, providing sworn affidavits and testimony to the Court, working with Crown Prosecutors and witnesses.

​

  • This position focuses heavily on interviewing children, caregivers, siblings, community members, and other relevant parties and compiling information electronically.  I also collaborate frequently with several agencies and organizations including:

    • Departments of Education, Health, and Justice & Public Safety

    • The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate

    • Horizon Health Network/Vitalité

    • RCMP

    • Municipal law enforcement

    • Child development support agencies

    • Indigenous child welfare agencies ​

    • Provincial/State/International child protection agencies

  • I provide short-term, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy interventions and services to families and children experiencing extreme poverty, trauma, intimate partner violence, substance use, mental health concerns, and other forms of hardship that result in a concern for a child's safety.

​

  • I perform lengthy and in-depth interviews with prospective foster parents to determine their suitability to assume primary care when a child cannot live with their ordinary caregivers.  I provide them with support, education, and ongoing training once they are approved. ​

  • Advocated for the rights of undocumented and precariously documented people and families to the local and provincial governments as well as community stakeholders, and the general public. This included guest speaking opportunities, offering training on human rights and immigrant rights, and leading group workshops and discussions.

  • Created policy briefings for local government and media releases for events and awareness campaigns regarding the rights of undocumented people and the negative implications of keeping them from participating in society based on fear of deportation.​

​

  • Produced digital and print materials such as posters, brochures, infographics, and PowerPoint presentations to help in advocacy and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

  • Organized and promoted social action events, workshops, rallies, and fundraising opportunities on and off the university campus.

Summer Intern - Special Projects and Content Creation

  • Created visually attractive promotional and informational materials to advance the knowledge of child rights among child-serving organisations and the general public.​

​

  • Assisted the Executive with organizing the Annual General Meeting, grant writing, and member recruitment. I developed a membership scheme that ensured a value-added and meaningful experience for our current and prospective network of professionals.  

​

  • Collaborated with Executive and general members to develop a strategic plan for Champions as well as a list of deliverables and action items to accomplish over the next year.​

​

  • Developed a toolkit to address the 42 articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child with a specific to NB focus, with target audiences of children and youth, parents, child-serving organizations, and the general public.

​

  • I was valued by the executive due to my hard work and dedication and was nominated at the AGM for the Secretary/Treasurer position and voted onto the Executive.  Subsequently, I was Vice-Chair, Chair, and Ex Officio.

BSW Direct Practice Intern

  • Presented the "It's Not Your Fault" rights-based abuse and violence prevention workshop in 7 schools to 29 classes and almost 700 grade seven students across the Anglophone West school district. The presentation provided critical education not otherwise taught in their curriculum describing their rights, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, how to identify safe adults and get help, as well as the responsibilities that adults have to protect them.

​​

  • Designed a training session about types of abuse, bullying, and harassment as well as strategies to mitigate risk for PEI Red Cross Water Safety summer camp counselors so they could better understand their legal responsibilities when working with children and youth.

​​

  • Established rapport and relationships with guidance counselors and teachers in ASD-W school to book workshops and also collaboratively follow-up with disclosures of abuse and violence from students that were elicited from the workshop.

​

  • Opened a space for incoming students to voice their concerns and fears about the upcoming school year and linked them with appropriate resources, on and off-campus, as well as helpful tips and tricks for success.
